Hi everyone,
Today I want to discuss about cervical cancer.Do I know anything about cervical cancer?U bet!!I have seen thousands of patient suffering from cervical cancer. Most of these women come with very late stage disease, usually when the tumor is very big and causing obstruction to the urinary tract and bowel resulting in difficulty in passing urine and passing motion. They also come with foul smelling tumor, sometimes they have very low level of red cell or having the condition called anemia that they become very weak, breathless and look like a sheet of white clothes..well,almost to the trained eyes!they usually ignore all symptoms because they were ashamed to see doctor.
This situation is very disturbing and very pitiful because cancer of cervix does present early with recognisable symptoms such as bleeding and painful coitus,if only women mindful of their body.
Of course the prerequisite of developing cancer of cervix is sexual intercourse and the risk is higher if woman has multiple partners or her partner has multiple partners. The main cause is infection by virus called HPV or human papilloma virus. There are more than a hundred of HPV types but the most prevalent are the HPV types 16 and 18.Please don't ask me why they are identified by number instead of fancy names!I suppose it is to make them unique and able to trigger the memory centre so that we can remember them better.Anyway, these 2 types cause about 70% of cervical cancer.High huh!But please be informed dear reader, that the international medical society has worked so hard to find vaccines and has succeeded!
Vaccines to prevent cancer of cervix up to 70% is now available. This vaccine can be given from age 9 up to age 45 years old depending on the types of vaccine.Anyway, there are only 2 types of vaccines currently available and one is still being regarded as controversial due to latest development.
But the sad thing is,despite being available cheaply worldwide, there are not many takers for the vaccines and I suppose the main reason is ignorance. So please to all my beloved reader...get vaccinated or get your love ones to consider getting vaccinated. Please discuss with your doctor if you have question. You may also ask me and i will try to answer any question to the best of my ability.
Lastly please remember that vaccination does not replace Pap Smear.Pap Smear should still be done according to schedule.
Till the next posting, have a nice day,be happy and live with passion.Take care.
